Mystery Missile Launch Stumps Defence Experts
On Monday 8th November, a vapor trail was seen heading northwest from the California coastline. What Eyewitnesses saw - and video evidence suggests they saw - convinced them that they’d seen a missile launch from a submarine north of Catalina Island. But the Pentagon doesn’t have any answers for the usual wave of conspiracy theories surrounding the supposed launch.
Popular among the many suggestions out there is that the launch was somehow a show of American military strength, displayed to coincide with President Obama’s diplomatic trip to Asia. Regardless, the Pentagon hasn’t received any knowledge of a launch from Navy, Air Force and Missile Defense Agency sources. Far more mundane is the suggestion that the trail is rather more simply coming from a plane: its rate of ascent, angle of flight and the lighting conditions have all conspired to make an optical illusion that looks like a typical missile trail. The rather less romantic idea that the head of the trail merely contains a bunch of people on some Fly Drive USA tour dents interest in what has proved a popular news item.
But maybe Conspiracy and tourism aren’t two entirely separate entities. The southern states are particularly blessed by the association with some of the greatest American conspiracies. The fascination some have with the grassy knoll of Dallas, Texas. Roswell, New Mexico invites people in because of its association with Alien sightings. How many tourists on Florida holidays have been disappointed by the lack of a moon-landing room behind the curtain? History is so frequently presented to holiday-goers in stale museums that the idea that one can discover a hidden history is incredibly alluring.
The state of Nevada also benefits from conspiracy tourism, having its connection to Area 51 as a money-spinner. But the south-western state has always enjoyed a different kind of tourism than much of the rest of the world. The casinos and bright lights alone of Las Vegas holidays are attractive enough, but in the 1950’s people would come on holiday to see the atomic explosions happening at the Nevada Test Site. Who knows, perhaps November’s missile launch is the first of many, and conspiracy junkies will soon flock to the Californian coast…
