Car Tyre Safety Guide
Maintaining our personal vehicle is something that many of us happily claim to be ignorant about, yet when it comes to a serious accident, that could potentially be caused by our lack of basic knowledge or observation, claiming ignorance is simply deplorable. Paying attention to the condition of your cars tyres is one factor that many people fail to consider before setting off on their daily commute, yet the consequences of a tyre blowout - at any speed - are almost unimaginable.
Possibly what is stopping so many people from performing basic checks on their vehicles before they use them could be the thought that they will be unable to spot damage or irregularities, or maybe it is just sheer laziness. Either way, checking your vehicles tyres before you use it is not a complex operation, it just requires some basic knowledge and a few minutes of your time; if you think of the potential consequences, you would be foolish not to.
The first thing you need to check is that your tyres are suitable for the car and for the conditions that the car is being driven in. In your vehicles owners manual you will find information about every part of your vehicle, including the advised tyre specifications. All you need to do is to check these specifications with the ISO metric tyre code which is the large block of letters and numbers situated on the sidewall of every tyre. Then, you should check that the tyres that you are using are designed to be used in the current weather conditions in your location, in other words, are you using dry weather tyres or all weather tyres or off-road tyres.
After you have established that the tyres on your vehicle are correct, you now should check that they do not show any signs of exterior damage. This undertaking can be a little time-consuming as the main contact area of the tyre is difficult to inspect and you may need a torch to see properly. However, the most important part you need to check is the sidewall and that part is the easiest. Be on the look out for any damage at all, however small, as even the tiniest notch in the rubber can potentially cause a blowout. While you are there, check the outer rim of the wheels for damage too.
While you are checking the tyres for damage, you should also be aware of any bulges in the tyre. While very small bulges are expected, anything over 3/8 of an inch is deemed dangerous and indicates the damaged internal structure of a tyre. Finally, ensure that all of your tyres are inflated to the specific tyre pressures stated in the owner manual.
