The lady artist is gallery director of a local art center and a working artist. As she explains her technique she creates a pastel portrait from an enlarged photocopy of a painting that was clicked during the fall at Slippery Rock for her model. She states that she doesn’t draw to the edges of the paper to prevent anything being covered by the frame. Layering colour becomes possible by painting on the wrong side of the pastel sheet.

The logs and branches that rise from the water are drawn using reds and blues. If she wishes to emphasize certain sections of her painting, she adds bits of red not visible on the photograph. Her exploitation of the fact is careful that pastels are as close as an artist can get to using pure pigment.

She says that sometimes, you have to stop and think about your color values. It isn’t too wise to use too much light too soon. When painting with pastels, conserving the white areas is not as important as in case of watercolors and the lighter shades can be layered on the darker ones. Pastels just have to be felt by you.

According to her, a caution should be exercised when using the color range. Without mixing different shades, one can find the right color, this is an important advantage enjoyed these days. If you aren’t satisfied with the result, you can comfortably wipe the color off and start over again while painting with pastels. It is a simpler medium.
